Problem:
Our programs are growing faster than our current spaces, our split staff, and team of volunteers can keep up with. We hate to send eager to learn youths away due to lack of capacity, so we are seeking to bring all our programs together under one roof. To maximize our efforts, reach more young people, and provide expanded and deeper program services.
Currently our two youth center spaces hold forty students for seated activities. However with most of our programs now having greater attendance and many needing more room for youths to move around, we’ve had to take to renting out additional spaces, setting up temporary tents, and adjusting our program times to the evenings after the sun has gone down enough for us to be able to utilize the beaches, community field, and public courts.
Although we are grateful for the access to those public spaces, that access has come with its own challenges. Equipment management, availability of restroom facilities, and being exposed to the elements and influence that comes with being on the streets in the night.
The Solution:
To create a cross culture, cross community pooling of resources to continue to support and provide opportunity for positive youth development. A space specifically for the youth to explore, find, grow in, and be seen and valued for their own unique talents. A resource point and holistic training ground. Mind, body, and soul.
Our plan is a phased gym and youth activity center building located between our two main serviced communities of Placencia and Seine Bight. The open-air, covered-court style design will allow us to gain maximum square footage while providing a safe, comfortable, and cost-effective facility for all area youth to enjoy.
Long Term Impact:
We are already seeing how changed lives, change lives. As our earliest program participants are giving back by volunteering and serving as peer leaders for the next generation. Bringing into practice our program mission which is: Building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities, by standing in the gap for this generation and empowering those helped individuals and their communities to close the gap for the following generations through education, empowerment, and equipping.
The initial 80’x 60’ steel building build out. Which will include the gym entrance, check in counter, equipment storage, restrooms, loft space, and our stationary equipment gym for our gymnastics program.
Estimated Cost: $100,000 USD
The addition of a 60’x60’ second gym space set to mirror our stationary equipment side will house a half-court basketball gym. This second side will allow us to host two programs at once.
Estimated Cost: $75,000 USD
An addition of 40’x60’ will take our half court basketball gym to a full sized court, that doubles as an auditorium. Unlocking the ability for us to host games, leagues, and large events.
Estimated Cost: $50,000 USD
A 20’x60’ final addition to the road frontage, brings the addition of a secondary event entrance with ticket booth and concession stand, as well as a retail space and second-story weight room.
Estimated Cost: $25,000 USD
The plans have been made, now the building process begins!
